Sociology major and 2020 graduate Gladis Cortez is the first person in her family to graduate from college.

And even though Cal State Fullerton’s commencement was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, she came to campus with her sister to take a few graduation photos.

“Graduation was supposed to be today when we walked across the stage,” Cortez said. “I wasn’t going to come but my sister, she’s all like, “Let’s go take pictures at least, to at least have some memories.”

Although she is disappointed about missing out on a traditional commencement, she said she understood why CSUF had to postpone and that this experience has taught her to be resilient.

“I appreciate coming here more seeing how other schools dealt with commencement,” she said. “I think Fullerton gave us all that hope of postponing the commencement instead of just canceling it.”
